In a powerful display of courage and mental fortitude, the junior archers of Sydney Olympic Park Archers (SOPA) have rewritten the script on what it means to succeed under pressure, bringing home a wave of medals from two major international tournaments in the space of just one month.
From the chilling winds of Winnipeg to the travel chaos en route to Christchurch, our young athletes have not just faced the competition—they have conquered adversity itself.
Global Glory: Marcus Yiu Triumphs at World Youth Championships
The month of monumental victories began with Marcus Yiu at the World Archery Youth Championships in Winnipeg, Canada. Competing on the world’s most demanding youth stage, Marcus was a key member of the Australian Recurve Under-21 Men’s team that secured an incredible Recurve Men’s Team Bronze Medal.
This is not just a medal; it’s a global statement. Against the world’s top archery nations, Marcus and his teammates demonstrated the calm, precision, and resilience that SOPA instils in its athletes. His performance on the elimination range proved he possesses the mental toughness to excel when the stakes are highest, solidifying his status as a formidable talent on the international circuit.
Trans-Tasman Triumph: SOPA’s Seven Conquer Chaos
Hot on the heels of Marcus’s success, our contingent of seven SOPA junior members embarked on the Trans Tasman Archery Championship in Christchurch, New Zealand. This highly anticipated competition between Australia and New Zealand tested their mettle before they even reached the shooting line.
The journey was fraught with challenges: flights were cancelled and delayed, throwing carefully managed competition routines and mental preparation into disarray. Upon arrival, the athletes were met with unforgiving weather conditions, forcing them to battle the elements as fiercely as their rivals.
Yet, our juniors refused to be defined by the chaos. They channelled their frustration into focus, displaying remarkable maturity and adaptability. They navigated the travel turmoil, rallied against the unpredictable winds and rain, and delivered performances that were nothing short of heroic.
The result is a testament to their unbreakable spirit: the SOPA seven returned home with a fantastic haul of medals, contributing significantly to the overall success of the Australian team.
“Our juniors have powerfully displayed their resilience and snatched victory with their courage and mental resilience. They are the embodiment of what SOPA stands for: preparation meets determination, no matter the obstacle.”
Resilience is the New Gold
The victories of Marcus Yiu in Winnipeg and our Trans-Tasman team in Christchurch are more than just sporting achievements—they are an inspiration. They teach us that true champions are not just masters of their craft, but masters of their minds.
To perform at a world-class level despite flight cancellations, weather disruptions, and the immense pressure of international competition requires an extraordinary level of mental toughness. Our SOPA juniors have demonstrated that the strength of their will is as accurate as the flight of their arrows.
We celebrate their hard work, their coaches’ dedication, and, most importantly, their unyielding resilience. The future of Australian archery is bright, and it is being powerfully shaped by the courageous young athletes of SOPA.
SOPA juniors that competed at Trans Tasman are Branden Tse, Lachlan Lee, Darren Candra, Millie Fisher, Sophia Jerochim, Jasmine Bull and Iris Chen. Special mention that Jasmine Bull also attain a Trans Tasman record of 692 beating her recent Australia national record in April 2025 at the WA30/720 round.
Join us in celebrating our champions! They have earned every single one of their medals through grit, courage, and a powerful display of the human spirit.
