Coaching Programs

Sydney Olympic Park Archers has coaching programs for all levels of the sport.

For new members to our club:

  • OzBow Program - Run by Leon Hides our OzBow Ambassador email induction@sopa-archery.org.au . Leon is a volunteer and gives up his time to help archers. 
  • Leon Hides has been using various types of bows since 1961. His experienced covers recurve with sights, recurve bare bow and compound. He is a club level shooter and takes part in archery because he enjoys it.

The OzBow Program is designed as a Step-by-Step performance and reward-based program for new members irrespective of age, gender or equipment they are shooting.

The program normally runs on Saturdays from 2pm (but not every Saturday) and once you are a member you will book through our portal. 

The program is intended to expose members to low level social competition and allow them to develop their skills before they join mainstream archery activities.

  • SOPA Junior Squad

The SOPA junior squad aims to encourage technical skill development, encourage enjoyment of sport and develop juniors to be competition ready. The squad involves coaching sessions every Sunday from 2-4pm during school terms, and training camps during school holidays. These sessions are suitable for all bow types and are best suited for those between the ages of 10-18, inclusive of all abilities. These sessions will cost $25 and active kids vouchers are accepted!

  • SOPA Development Team (previously B team)

This team is for recurve freestyle and barebow archers who are interested in competing at a state level and above. Training sessions run weekly on Saturdays 12-2pm and cost $20. Team members must meet training requirements below. Express interest for this team by emailing coaching@sopa-archery.org.au. Members of this team can progress to the SOPA Elite team once they have met the relevant requirements and submitted an application.

Training requirements:

  1. 6hrs training a week (including shooting and relevant strength training)
  2. Attendance at 1 group session per week
  3. Keep a training diary
  • SOPA Elite team (previously A team)

The SOPA Elite team has developed numerous athletes towards national team selection. This team is for recurve freestyle and barebow archers competing at a national level and seeking to eventually progress into national squads. Training will run alongside the development team until there are an adequate number of members to split the squads. To be eligible for the SOPA Elite team members must shoot the relevant scores and submit an application via email to the coaching team and include your rating and last 3 events and scores to coaching@sopa-archery.org.au. Once in the team members must meet the following requirements:

  1. 12 hours of training per week
  2. At least 1 gym session per week
  3. Attend at least 1 group session per week
  4. Keep a training diary
  5. Shoot state tournaments
  6. Shoot 6 QREs or equivalent (example - SOPA Matchplay) a year
  7. You must be a full member of SOPA

  • Compound Development Team

This newly development program at SOPA has opened the doors for increase the skill level of our compound archers. Coach, Jonathon Milne won bronze at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio and has many years of experience behind his bow. Jonny will help work through technical aspects that need improving along with providing recommendations on equipment changes.

  • Para Archery Development Team

Working with the National Para Coach, Ricci Cheah, this program aims to develop para-archers for national and international competitions.

It is open to all para-archers of all ages, abilities and skill level. Ricci will work with archers on technique and mental mindset along with getting them ready for competitions.

  • Private coaching
