Mastering the Bow: Your 12-Week Duke of Ed Archery Program
Are you ticking off your Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and looking for a challenge that is way more exciting than running laps or lifting weights? Step up to the shooting line at our club.
Archery is a brilliant, high-focus sport to lock in for your Physical Recreation or Skills section. To make sure you smash the award's strict rules, we have built a 12-week program that teaches you elite Olympic-level technique. You will master the KSL Shot Cycle II, the world-famous biomechanical training system used by top Olympic athletes!
The Duke of Ed Breakdown
To nail your Bronze Level section, the Duke of Ed requires you to practice for at least 1 hour per week over 12 consecutive weeks. Our program takes you from an absolute beginner to a high-scoring archer, giving you awesome weekly stories to log in your Online Record Book (ORB).

Foundation
Weeks 1 - 4
Phase 2:

What You’ll Be Learning Every Week
Phase 1: The Biomechanical Foundation
(Weeks 1–4)
Before you can smash the gold center, you have to master your body. Your first month is all about building a rock-solid posture.
Week 1: Safety Induction, Stance & Nocking
Find your dominant eye and ace your SOPA safety check. You will learn the KSL open stance (angling your feet 10–15 degrees) to lock your hips and brace your core.
Week 2: Hooking, Gripping & Mindset
Learn the exact way to hook your fingers onto the string using a finger tab and hold the bow grip. You will also practice deep breathing to steady your nerves before you lift the bow.
Week 3: Setup & Linear Drawing
Practice raising your bow arm without lifting your shoulder. You will learn to pull the string using your big upper-back muscles instead of dragging it back with your arm.
Week 4: Finding Your Jaw Anchor
Learn to bring the string to the exact same spot under your jawbone every single time. We will start your shooting practice at a comfortable 10-metre distance.
Phase 2: Power, Transfer & Release
(Weeks 5–8)
This is where archery gets technical. You will learn to shift the heavy weight of the bow off your arms and onto your skeleton.
Week 5: Loading, Transfer & Holding
Move the bow's weight out of your forearm and squeeze it into your lower back muscles (a spot coaches call the LAN2 zone). This gives you a perfectly steady hold.
Week 6: Aiming & Continuous Expansion
Fun fact: true champions don't look at the target until their body is completely locked in. You will practice expanding your chest to execute a smooth shot.
Week 7: Coach Video Analysis
Time for the replay! You will jump on camera with a SOPA coach to look at your alignment and make sure your posture is good.
Week 8: The Surprise Release & Follow-Through
Train your fingers to completely relax, letting the string slip away for a "surprise release." Your hand should naturally sweep backward along your neck.
Phase 3: Distance, Scoring & Your Big Target
(Weeks 9–12)
Now that your form looks incredible, it’s time to step back, increase the distance, and hunt for that certificate!
Week 9: Stepping Back to 15m
Move your targets back to 15 metres. You will learn to evaluate how your muscles felt right after the arrow hits the target to build muscle memory.
Week 10: The 20-Metre Line
Advance to the standard 20-metre distance. You will figure out your new sight marks while keeping your posture perfectly straight.
Week 11: The Official 72-Arrow Ranking Round
Time to put the KSL cycle to the test under tournament conditions. You will shoot a full, official 72-arrow ranking round by joining one of our Saturday clubshoots.
Week 12: Final Log Review & Sign-Off
Add up your scores, celebrate how much your technique has improved, and sit down with your SOPA Assessor to get your official Duke of Ed digital sign-off.
The Ultimate Goal: Your Completion Certificate 🏆
We aren't just signing you off for showing up—we want you to leave as a certified archer! To successfully finish the program and earn your official SOPA Completion Certificate, you must push your skills to hit a minimum score of 500 points out of 720 during your 72-arrow round at the end of the program. It takes focus, but with the KSL system, you can absolutely do it!
Gear Checklist: Buy vs. Borrow
Don't sweat it if you don't own any archery gear yet!
Borrowing Club Gear:
You are welcome to use SOPA's club-ready recurve bows, arrows, and safety gear for the entire duration of your 12 weeks. It’s perfect for getting a feel for the sport.
Buying Your Own Kit:
If you want to take your training seriously and practice with the exact same setup every single week, our team can help guide you and your parents on purchasing your very own starter recurve bow kit.
