Australian Open 2021 Results

The Australian Open is the pinnacle archery event in the country and brings the best archers together from around the nation.

This tournament helps prepare our elite archers for international competitions and therefore follows the same format as World Cups and the Olympic Games.

This year the event was hosted by Sydney Olympic Park Archers (20-23 May) at the Sydney Olympic Park Archery Centre. This range was the location of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games archery competition and where Simon Fairweather won Australia's first and only (so far) Olympic gold medal in archery.

Excitingly in 2021, mixed team matchplay and a barebow division was held for the very first time at an Australian Open. It was great to see more archers being able to participate and be able to showcase Australia's best archers.

This report provides a day by day summary including competition results and highlights.

Matchplay Information

Teams and Mixed Teams information

You must register your teams by 4pm on Thursday 20th May at the registration desk or email me at recorder@sopa-archery.org.au by Thursday 4pm. Click here to download form to complete to register a team.

N.B. Archers in the National Squad or P24 program your teams have been pre-allocated and you will be informed by the National Coaches.

Teams

  • Three-members same gender and bow type teams
  • Ranking of teams by the combined score of the team from the ranking round.
  • Elimination Match play by WA Set Scoring for Recurve, and cumulative scoring for Compound.

Mixed Teams

  • Two-member mixed gender, same bow type
  • Ranking of mixed teams by the combined score of the two from the ranking round.
  • Elimination Match play by WA Set Scoring for Recurve, and cumulative scoring for Compound.

Individual match play

A shoot off in Individual match play, following a tie, is now based on the arrow closest to the middle. Only if both arrows are exactly the same DISTANCE, not score as was the previous rule, will there be a second shoot off.

(Previously, if both Compound individuals shot an 'x', or both Recurve archers shot a '10', there would be a second shoot off. It became too time consuming, so was changed)

For teams, a shoot off win is determined first by total score. If the teams both have the same score, then the arrow closest to the middle determines the winner.

All match play will be shot simultaneously on Friday afternoon and Saturday. Alternating shooting will take place on the Finals day, Sunday.

Target Allocations

Please see draft target allocations. If there is any incorrect information, please contact the organising committee.

Please note these are likely to change and you will be required to check the target allocations at the registration desk at the event.

Scoring Information

Tournaments in Australia are governed by Archery Australia rules. However, the Shooting rules are as per World Archery Rules, as this is a World Archery registered event.
Please note, due to logistics, because of the barebow test event, the Semi Finals on Saturday will not be shot with alternating scoring. They will be shot with simultaneous shooting.

For each scoresheet, make sure you check:

  • Athlete name and surname is EXACTLY the same as per registered on Archers Diary
  • AA Membership number correctly filled
  • Date of event correctly filled
  • Round of the event correctly filled
  • Target number correctly filled
  • Signature of both athlete and witness
  • Check that all arrow values in Archer’s Diary are exactly as per the paper score sheet
  • Columns of Xs and 10s correctly counted
  • 6 arrows score and progressive score is added correctly as per Arche
